Shades, Ropes and Plugs

Yesterday, a friend and I went to see 50 Shades of Gray.  Originally there were going to be six of us but we couldn't seem to get it all straight, so it ended up being only two.  We went to an afternoon show and the theatre was filled with 'grannies'.  I know I was one of them but my friend said she was the youngest and I was the next youngest.  Jaimie Dornan is no Christian Grey - not for want of trying but I just couldn't buy it.  All in all, I think if you didn't read the book you would be left wanting. I was left wanting and I did read the books - maybe I just don't remember what happened in what book since I read them three years ago but my friend and I left the theatre asking "what's all the damn fuss about?"  You'll have to let me know your thoughts.

Next, I have a 5000 word novella out there now - Learning the Ropes  it's on sale for .99 cents.  Parts of it were originally featured on this site and PK's FF once upon a time. Shameless plug here.

Going to sign off here, have to come up with a story for Monday.  Keep your fingers crossed.  Hope it warms up if you're in the deep freeze and if you're not think about how lucky you are.

See you later for more Aimless Ramblings.

  1. Thanks for the critique. I think they had promised getting an actor willing to play the part. Was Johnson any better as Anastasia? Sorry you didn't get to enjoy the movie.

    1. Dakota Johonson did a good job as Anastasia, very believable. It wasn't Jamie's acting, it was that I don't think he fit what I had in mind for Christian Grey.

  2. Hi Sunny, sorry that the movie didn’t work for you. We haven’t watched it yet and are very probably going to wait for the DVD, so I’ll read all the reviews till December (?) and see what I can make of it. But I do already know that my idea of Christian Grey was different, too. I wished for a more masculine and more adult looking man. But since I have only watched the trailers and seen pictures, I should not be negative about him.

He, what’s wrong with teasing us here and promoting your story in your blog?! Great that you do that! I have it on my kindle and can’t wait to read it.

  3. Hi Sunny, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the movie. Sorry you were left wanting. I wasn't convinced how well it would translate to film. Still curious to see it, but will wait for the dvd.

    1. By all means, see the movie - movies hardly ever measure up to books, some things don't translate well but I wouldn't have missed it. I think my expectations were too high.

  4. Well as many have pointed out before Mr. Christian Grey is not as much as Dom as an abuser, and he has serious personality issues he should have worked out prior to seduce to the little one. The book was not all that great, but the thing that was great that it opened the discussion of D/s to a broad audience. And the movie will do that even more so.

And maybe it will inspire some women (and men) to try out a little power shift with men that are a. not as handsome as mr. Grey is and b. not have the kind of money mr. Grey has. I'm convinced that the fact that is is loaded helps to make him more attractive and powerful to many women.

I prefer more the stories about real people. You don't make your heroines filthy rich, and I love them anyway...

Thank you for sharing what you thought of the movie, I was curious,
    Han

    1. Christian Grey has a wounded soul and definite personality issues. The books were entertaining and I enjoyed reading them and you are so right, they opened a social dialog on a much wider scale.

Thanks for the compliment about my heroines. Wait for the DVD - but do make it a point to see the film.

  5. Haven't seen it yet, but I do think that if Mr. Grey were more of an 'every day' sort of man, the abuse tag may not have been discussed as much. Then again...it is fantasy...
New record low here today...minus 6..wind chill minus 25......UGH...

    1. Oh abby, I feel for you with the horrible cold. I think people forget its a story, not real life and it's not literature.

  6. You know I enjoyed the book for the story, not for it's lasting literature value. But… we have nothing to do this weekend so Nick and I are going Saturday. I don't expect to be blown away, but it should be better shivering at home.

I'm on my way to get your book as soon as I finish my comment!

    1. I'm with you, PK. I enjoyed the books for the stories - definitely not literature but like Han said they opened up a lot of dialog.

Let us know what you think after tomorrow.

    1. By all means, see it - one way or another. It's worth watching, just to know what all the fuss was about.

  8. Hey SG,

Just bought your book, don't know when I'll get around to reading it though.

Thanks for the review. I wont be going to see it in the cinema but will watch it when it comes out on netflix or TV.

    Have a good weekend.

  9. I think I'm about ready for the 50 Shades hype to die down already.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend and good luck on the writing!

  10. We saw it, I didn't think it was too bad. The books were better, but that is usually the case. My husband was confused by the abrupt ending, and we laughed at some of the acting, but I've seen way worse movies before lol.
I do enjoy stories about real couple much more though :) Hope you're having a great week, I'm trying to stay warm!

    1. The books were better, more content. I have definitely seen worse movies- I think i was disappointed in that Christian was not what I expected. Jamie wasn't a bad actor just my expectation let me down.

  11. Hey Sunny,
Lol - I thought you had a totally different kind of PLUG in mind when I read your title. ;)

I did read the first 2 books oh so long ago, when I was into tortured dysfunctional heroes, but never went back when the 3rd book came out. I really couldn't imagine a story like that translating well on screen - although some are really enjoying it - but I'm holding on to my memories of how I pictured them in my mind.

I really loved that you sat in a theater of 'grannies'. :)
    hugs,

    1. Well Cali - did that on purpose - you know to lure in the reader. lol

Tortured dysfunctional heroes - isn't that half the world these days. Hold onto those memories.

  12. I was thinking like Cali!...... Lol
I'm so indecisive about the movie. I just don't want all the negativity! Glad you got to see it though!

  13. Good gravy Sunny...got me all excited thinking I was gonna read all about playing with ropes and butt plugs in a new story. LOL Sorry you weren't impressed with 50 Shades...I haven't been impressed by the trailers but then again, I've seen trailers of other movies where that was the only good part of the movie. Wishing you and Ray a lovely weekend.

    Hugs and Blessings...
